Blog #3

I chose to do what most probably did and typed genres of research writing into the Google toolbar. In my experiences the first article that pops up is usually the most relevant so I chose that one. It was an article written by Purdue Owl that told me a lot of what I already knew. It started out telling me about how unnatural research writing is for most people, but how pretty much every person that is successful will have to do some form of research writing throughout their careers. The article said to be a good research writer takes practice, discipline, and the willingness to learn and make mistakes. The article discussed two genres of research writing. The two were analytical, and argumentative. Argumentative looks for justification for an assertion. Analytical research seeks to find reasons for specific occurrences, or analyze them.

I have narrowed my choices of research down to “How much do strippers make in comparison to police officer”, and ” What sexually attracts woman”. I chose the strippers question because I fell it pertains to what I am going to be doing with my life when im older, and I think I could make a legitimate argument that police officers should make a higher salary than they do. I think ” How much do strippers make in comparison to police officers” would be more of an argumentative piece because I would be arguing for higher salary based on the difficulty of the career. My only problem is that it would be real hard to find out how much the strippers actually make in a year because the salary would vary over who I chose to ask, or research.

I chose ” What sexually attracts woman” because being a man I think that just about all of us would like to know more information about the opposite sex. I am leaning towards this question more than the first because I think I could all around have more fun with it, and learn a lot more new information. “What sexually attracts woman” would be a more analytical paper, and I could analyze what all men would like to know more about. I think people ( more in general men ) would have a better time reading this article than my other topics, and in the long run would be able to do better research.
